BLUF: Automating your finances is even more important to military members because of frequent moves and deployments, simplify your life and never pay a late fee.
Sometimes our family feels like we are part of the witness protection program;
“Oh no, the bad men have found us again, it is time to move again!“
Every time we move, is another chance for bills to get delayed or misplaced in the mail. Mix in various deployments (and longer vacations) between those moves and the likelihood of missing things even increases. In comes automation.
Automation Is Your Friend
One of the best things we did was to automate as many things as possible. It has lowered our stress and enabled us to focus on more important things in life. I know that all our bills are taken care of and our investments will continue to grow automatically.
- Credit cards
- Paid in full automatically
- Utilities (internet, electric, water, natural gas)
- Cell phones
- Rent / mortgage payments
- Roth IRAs
- Taxable investments
- Any other reoccurring bill
Even our rental property, we state automatic direct deposit payments are required in the contract. Therefore, we are not looking for checks in the mail or wondering where a payment is.
Money is simply a tool that should be working for you, not you consistently managing it.
When choosing companies to work with, I will always check if they have auto systems set up. For example; we need to have the sprinkler system turned on and off with the seasons at our rental property. I used to use a company that I needed to remember to call every spring and fall. They did not have an automatic database set up. I ended up leaving the company and going with another that allowed me to “set it and forget it.”
By automating as much as possible, we have never paid interest on a credit card and never paid a single late fee. As landlords, we have never dealt with a single late rent payment.
This simple concept of automating everything has been instrumental to building and our wealth and simplifying our life.
The bad men always keep finding us.
